Combat = Drugs & Alcohol!
According to a study by the Pentagon, combat dramatically increases the chance of alcoholism and drug
use in soldiers. High incidence of binge drinking and heavy drinking after combat to “escape” is

VA Introduces Suicide Hotline
Last month, the VA introduced a suicide hotline for veterans. In the past month, 22,000 veterans have
called the new hotline. Of a special note, male veterans who have seen combat are twice as likely to try to
commit suicide as non-veteran males.
Treatment for TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Falls Short
A recent analysis of the VA’s traumatic brain injury (TBI) program shows a severe lack of fulfillment of
promises made to the American public to help our veterans.

H.R. 1527 – Rural Veterans Access to Care Act
This bill would allow highly rural veterans to access local health care. This is essential to many veterans
who live hundreds of miles from a VA facility but are not currently able to access healthcare services
(such as PTSD counseling) and not able to afford them in the local markets.
H.R. 3051 – Heroes at Home Act
This bill will establish a program for training and certification of family caregivers of veterans with
traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder effectively allowing them to deal with their loved
ones and retain their identity. THIS could be the help for families we have been BEGGING for!
S. 1233- Veterans Traumatic Brain Injury and Health Problems Improvement
Act
This bill will increase access to health care services and provide a reintegration program for veterans and
soldiers who have traumatic brain injuries. This is currently primarily being cared for in the private sector
and very often missed or misdiagnosed as PTSD.
H. R. 463 – Honor Our Commitment to Veterans Act
This bill would lift the hiring freeze currently imposed on the VA to allow adequate staffing to meet the
needs of today’s veterans.
