September 11 - Remembering with Action
The main portion of the photo above is a tile on display at the National September 11
Museum in New York City. The tile was part of the "Tiles for America" project started right
after 9/11/01 by the Contemporary Ceramic Studio Association in Greenwich Village to
offer hope and solace to a city and nation rocked by the unthinkable.
Life changed for many people on September 11, 2001. Thousands of families woke up
the next day missing and grieving the loss of someone they loved. Police, firefighters, and
rescue workers from NYC and throughout the United States worked around the clock to
find those still trapped and recover with dignity those who were lost. And, the fabric of our
military communities around the globe was changed forever also.
Last year, on the 10th Anniversary of that fateful day, we focused as an organization on
the stories of heroes and those who loved them and their memories of that day. This year,
however, we're taking it a step farther... and we're asking everyone, young and old, no
matter your skill level or location, to help. This year we're focusing on the hope, strength,
and dedication to ACTION we all felt individually and as a nation as we woke on the
morning after September 11.
It was a time when we were drawn together inexplicably by the heart strings of tragedy and
shock into a cohesive citizenry focused on helping, on rebuilding, on doing all we could to
ACT in hopes of making sure our fellow Americans knew they were not alone.
Eleven years later that feeling and the innate call to ACTION we all felt has mostly been
lost. And that loss exists at a time when our nation's heroes and families... those who
answered the call to defend their country following the horrible attacks on September 11...
need our action the most.
So, here we are. We are Veterans and loved ones who are living each day with the life
changing costs of that day and we're issuing a challenge. We are challenging you,
wherever you are, whomever you are, to help us remind our fellow citizens and each other
that our CALL TO ACTION is not over... that we still have work to do (and in many cases
will have work to do for decades to come)... to ensure that the heroes lost or injured since
September 11 and their families are not left to fall.
Let's get to it,
